FLO: Foundations of Learning Orientation

Foundations of Learning Orientation (FLO) is a structured framework designed to establish the foundational conditions under which effective learning becomes possible. It focuses not on subject content, but on how learners understand, approach, and organise their engagement with academic work.

FLO addresses a common challenge in senior secondary education: learners are expected to study, interpret tasks, and perform in assessments without a clear understanding of how learning is structured or what is being evaluated. As a result, effort often does not translate into consistent academic performance.

This category provides access to the FLO orientation domains, which develop the learner’s capacity to:

  • interpret academic tasks and expectations accurately
  • organise study in a structured and sustainable way
  • engage with material beyond memorisation
  • understand how assessment and performance are linked

FLO functions as a foundational orientation layer for learning. It does not provide subject-specific teaching or replace classroom instruction. Instead, it aligns learners with how learning operates, enabling more stable, coherent, and effective academic engagement across subjects.
